Recreation Intern – Summer 2011

POSITION: Internship

REQUIREMENTS:
• High school diploma required; some college experience highly preferred.
• Knowledge of computers including Microsoft Office and experience in event planning.
• Ability to work independently and maintain a flexible schedule.
• Display a good understanding of the philosophy of recreation sports programs.
• Some knowledge of sports skills and methods required.
• Ability to work cooperatively with private organizations and special interest groups.

DUTIES:
• Serve as the League Coordinator, responsible for being the main contact and direct representative of the Tee Ball/Coach Pitch Program.
• Oversee registration, coach team selection, and pre-season meetings.
• Assist in the inventory and distribution of supplies and equipment.
• Assist in the recruiting and hiring of staff along with the scheduling, supervising, and evaluation of part time staff.
• Assist the coaches in the setup/tear-down of practices and games.
• Prepare records and reports including payroll, league/event schedules, evaluations, and marketing materials.
• Additional duties and experience can be gained from assisting in the planning, setup, take down, and administration of events such as: Youth and Adult Tennis Program, Sand Volleyball and Adult Softball Leagues.
• Performing all other duties as assigned.

OTHER:
• Evenings and weekends will be required.

YMCA Camp Orkila - employment/internship

Spring 2011 - Environmental Education & Outdoor Recreation at YMCA
Camp Orkila

Located on one of the beaches of Orcas Island in the Puget Sound 75
miles north of Seattle, YMCA Camp Orkila offers 285 acres of
beautiful forest, marine, and freshwater environments, as well as a
salmon hatchery, new Marine Education Center with 18,000 gallon salt
water aquarium, several challenge courses, and large organic garden.

Staff members will facilitate two programs every week: The
Environmental Education program, which caters to elementary and
middle school groups and occurs on the weekdays, and the Weekend
Family Camp program, which caters to parent/child YMCA groups from
the Seattle area and occurs on the weekends.

Responsibilities include teaching classes in marine / aquatic
science, terrestrial ecology, earth science, and facilitating group
development and challenge course activities. You will work at least
two evenings a week running evening programs. All staff will work 5
days a week which will include at least one weekend day facilitating
recreation activities for family camp and retreat programs. Camp
staff also assist with many other camp operations, including
cleaning, kitchen work, and maintenance projects.

Requirements: Experience working in environmental education or BS/BA
in environmental science, education, recreation, or related field
preferred. First aid/CPR certification by first day of employment
preferred. You must have some experience working with children. Being
a team player, having a sense of humor and a strong work ethic are
essential!

Salary: $230-$250(DOE)/week + room/board in nice staff housing.
Workers comp provided. Opportunity to learn sea kayaking and other
great perks!

Employment is March 10th through June 18th, 2011. Can be set up as an

The Georgia State Games is one of the largest Amateur Olympic-Style Sports Festivals in the country. We rely HEAVILY on top quality interns to operate many of our sporting Events Projects and Programs. It is a tremendous experience and we had a ton of interns from across the country last year. The interns get a GREAT, HANDS-ON experience. No fetching coffee. Real life planning AND implementation of activities and programs in what they will experience.

Requirements:
1) We are seeking top level, organized, team oriented, talented, aggressive, outgoing and innovative interns to assist in the preparation and implementation for this year's events. Internship opportunities are offered in both paid and unpaid positions depending on intern's experience & skills, time commitment availability, academic credit ability and semester sought. Housing is also available semester.

2) This internship is NOT for the student looking to just getting by, being a social butterfly or to party for the semester.

All applicants must have strong writing skills and knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.

* Students have come from the following US States: AK, AL, AR, CA, CT, DC, FL, GA, IA, IL, IN, KY, LA, MA, ME, MI, MS, MN, NC, ND, NH, NJ, NY, OH, OK, PA, RI, SC, TN, TX, VA, WI and WV and from the countries of Canada, England, Germany and Hungary just to intern with the Georgia Games.
* Internships are first offered to students completing the internship for academic credit.
* Interns have turned down the United State Olympic Committee, Professional and College programs to intern with the Georgia State Games.

Placement:
* Priority will be given to those students completing the internship for academic credit and/or for a graduation requirement.
* Priority will be given to students currently enrolled in college.

For several years in a row, the Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management at Grand Valley State University has experienced considerable growth. The number of students enrolled in our program (500+) continues to rise and we once again need to support that growth with the recruitment of talented faculty to complement our expanding team.
